The Nigerian government has confirmed that it will participate intensively in the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, which represents an important opportunity to consider the effects of climate change in Africa, noting that it has included the most important expectations and priorities it hopes to achieve from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The local newspaper "Premium Times" quoted the local newspaper "Premium Times" quoted Nigerian Minister of Environment Mohammed Abdullah as saying on Saturday as saying that "The summit represents a rare opportunity for experts and officials to meet and address a challenge that affects humanity, aimed at showing unity against an existential threat that can only be overcome, through coordinated action and effective implementation. He explained that Nigeria's top priorities and expectations from the conference include the provision of a national pavilion in COP 27, which will serve as a basis for hosting all the activities of the Nigerian delegation during the conference for bilateral meetings. It will also provide a place to communicate with potential investors and related opportunities for Nigerians. He pointed out that the arrangements for hosting side events in the Nigeria pavilion by the owners of Interested interest is being discussed, saying “side events to be hosted at the pavilion will relate to the presentation of Nigerian best practices and exchanges with the international community.”

He revealed that Nigeria, under the auspices of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), will host a high-level side event as a follow-up to President Muhammadu Buhari’s session at the fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire last May.

The meeting is expected to attract leading global leaders and funding from development partners to focus on climate finance to address devastating desertification and drought for member states, he said, noting that the focus will be on exploring climate finance options and building partnerships to drive emissions reduction, adaptation and climate change mitigation ambitions.

He noted that the focus will also be on a sustainable financing mechanism on combating desertification, climate-smart agricultural practices and adaptation strategies.

He stressed that Nigeria will seek cooperation and support in sustainable waste management, providing renewable and clean energy, financing loss and damage and will push developed countries to fulfill their financial pledges to help address the climate crisis, noting that Nigerian delegates participating in the event and include representatives from the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Climate Change (ICCC), high-level representatives from the Presidency and National Assembly, as well

It is worth mentioning that Egypt is hosting the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) from 7 to 18 November 2022, which will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, and represents an important opportunity to consider the effects of climate change in Africa.
