Ukrainian official: Crimean bridge bombing Kiev gift to Putin on his birthday

Oleksi Danilov, secretary of the National Defense and Security Council of Ukraine, posted a video on his Twitter page showing pictures of the fire devouring the Crimean Bridge with a Christmas greeting song of the late American actress, singer and model Marilyn Monroe, as if what happened was Ukraine's gift to Putin on his 70th birthday celebrated yesterday, Al Arabiya Network reported.

After a truck bombing on the Crimean Bridge at dawn on Saturday, which set fire to a number of fuel tanks on a train that was traveling across the bridge, the adviser to the Ukrainian president commented: "We will pass everything that is illegal and the Crimean Bridge is the beginning."

"Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything must be returned to Ukraine, and Russia must be expelled from wherever it occupies," Mikhailo Podulyak tweeted.

The Kerch Bridge became the media talk on Saturday after a car bomb exploded on it, causing a major fire on the main crossing between Crimea annexed by Moscow and the Russian mainland.

"Today at 06:07 (03:07 GMT), a car bomb exploded on the road section of the Crimea Bridge, sparking the fire in seven railway tanker locomotives heading to Crimea," the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee announced.

Damage from the blast at the Crimea Bridge is estimated at $10 million, local media reported.

The Kerch crossing is a couple of land bridges and railways built by Russia after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

The bridge, built on the orders of President Putin, is used to transport military equipment to Russian forces fighting in Ukraine. The bridge is 19 kilometers long and reaches a height of 35 meters, and was opened in 2018.

The bridge was built with stents of massive concrete and steel structures, which can only be shot down by a direct hit from a massive rocket, according to reports.

The first passenger train across the bridge opened on December 25, 2019, and it is estimated that the cost of building the bridge was $3 billion, while for the Russian residents of Crimea, this bridge is the “lifeblood” as it connects them to Russia.

Russia reportedly deployed an air defense system in 2019 to protect the bridge
